A laryngocele is a hernia of the laryngeal mucous that
originates in the appendicular extreme of the ventricle,
and causes an air-filled dilatation originated by an
abnormal increase in size of the ventricular saccule. It is
located in the anterior border of the ventricle and it is
sometimes extended to the top of the upper edge of the
thyroid cartilage. It can be internal, external or mixed,
the latter being the most frequent. It contains air with
a slight overpressure, although if the airpath from the
laryngocele to the laryngeal lumen is obstructed, it can
lead to laryngomucocele and laryingopiocele, depending
on whether it is filled with mucus or pus. Most of them
are unilateral and asymptomatic, and are often incidental
findings due to the increased use of CT scan. Its relationship
with laryngeal cancer has made it necessary to exclude
an underlying neoplasia. It is covered with respiratory
tiroides.
